2009 redux: New old Paloma Faith

...but a brilliant surprise it is: a video for Paloma Faith's Smoke And Mirrors, the one with a big, glittery bauble of a chorus. The show's not quite over either. Paloma has been recording a new album for the past month.

That video looks like what would happen if you and Robbie ran a hotel. Love it!

Yes, Robbie DOES look like that magician. Totes.

And now for the obvious...why hasn't this woman's album been a hit in the US yet, much less even been RELEASED? This could have been a hit of at least a Duffy proportion (maybe not a Winehouse), and somebody should lose their job somewhere if they haven't already because of it.

The video shows how much style and fun can be had with a low budget. The costumes are tremendous (as is the song). Shades of Annie Lennox-Diva era anyone?

Count, this is the closest that Paloma's gotten to being released here in the States...

Better than nothing, I suppose. Florence got a break being used in the "Eat Pray Love" trailer.

Mmm...perhaps i should give her album another listen. It didn't grab me first time around, and I kind of threw it back into the CD rack without another thought. A little premature perhaps....

I don't know if being anonymously placed in the background of a beauty ad is really "breaking" the market, and it really isn't much more than nothing. Now if SHE had been in the ad, maybe.

Seriously though, don't we all think she could have been big in the states by now if old Wine-y and Duffy could do it? I mean, her songs aren't about her drug problems, true, but...

Sorry...wasn't trying to say that was breaking the market. Honestly, I think it's possible, but an act like Paloma needs a hook. Adele had her Saturday Night Live performance, Florence and the Machine just had the VMAs, and Paloma would benefit from something along those lines

I hate to say it, but don't you think Dancing With the Stars could help? I mean, there's lots of retro on there, right?

    HA! Bitches.

As to why Paloma hasn't encountered the right label "head" to get a U.S. release, there are already so many of these retro broadz clogging the market. Oh, wait -- when has that EVER stopped record companies here before? I'm surprised she's not #1 on Billboard!
