Celebrating Madonna

10 Thoughts About Madonna's new Hits Collection

1 Best image in the booklet (2-disc version only; 1 disc = useless!): shown above

2 Wonkiest lyric: From What It Feels Like For A Girl: "Hands that rest on jutting hips, repenting." No Madonna, the image of hands on hips - arms akimbo? - suggests defiance, not repentance.

3 Sharpest lyric: From Don't Tell Me: "Tell the bed not to lay like the open mouth of a grave / Not to star up at me like a calf down on its knees." Lines most likely written by her brother-in-law, Joe Henry.

4 Track that has aged better than expected: the weird, sensual Justify My Love

5 Song that does not deserve to be here: The shiteous new Lil Wayne "feature" Revolver

6 Most missed song: sweet pop Angel or rare disco gem Gambler or soul lifter Nothing Fails

7 Most unexpected song, but a good choice: Dress You Up

8 Version of Madonna missing from the video collection: Herky Jerky Geisha Madonna from Nothing Really Matters

9 Video I could have lived without: Love Profusion

10 Celebration? Get back to me in a year to say whether it's just fine or great.

While she really needed this, I can't help but feel that too many songs were still left out, and although I know This Used to be My Playground isn't a favorite of many, it was a #1 song. It's weird so much from Erotica is missing--Deeper & Deeper, Rain, Bad Girl, with singles from the same period: Playground, I'll Remember, and You'll See or anything Evita-esque getting shafted. Glad to have most of the early stuff, although a single edit of Holiday would have been preferable. I was really hoping for American Life without the rap, but one can dream.

    My top ten +1:
    Frozen
    Ray of Light
    Music
    Hung Up
    Into the Groove
    Express Yourself
    Like a Prayer
    Till Death Do Us Part
    Sorry
    Impressive Instant
    Sky Fits Heaven

Anybody who has this many solid tracks to choose from really deserves a much longer list, huh?

Yeah it's a shame in particular that Angel and Gambler didn't make the list - however limiting to a 2 disc set was always going to mean it never pleased everyone and was just tempting to the casual passer by Madonna fan (if you know what I mean - buying it for their sister because they see it on the shelf whilst in the queue at Tesco).

    My top ten +1?
    Like A Prayer
    Vogue
    Take a Bow
    True Blue
    Cherish
    Erotica
    Hung Up
    Borderline
    Papa Don't Preach
    Gambler
    Supernatural

  3. # Blogger John

Overall, it seems like they did a good job with a situation that would never please every fan.

    Top 10 +1:
    Frozen
    Love Don't Live Here Anymore
    Keep It Together
    Cherish
    Til Death Do Us Part
    Burning Up
    Rescue Me
    Don't Tell Me
    Miles Away
    Dress You Up
    Sorry

  4. # Blogger Aaron

Ooh - I'm a fan of the Love Profusion video, and I don't remember that image - but OK! I think a "for the fans" third disc edition would have been nice.

    My top 10 + 1 is probably:

    Sorry
    Love Profusion
    Nobody Knows Me
    Don't Tell Me
    The Power Of Goodbye
    Beautiful Stranger
    Die Another Day
    Celebration
    Incredible
    Rain
    Frozen (Or Spotlight)

  5. # Blogger xolondon

Why did I put Jump in? Til Death Do Us Part probably trumps that!

  6. # Blogger Jason

I'll throw my hat into the ring. My top ten +2(in no particular order):

    Live to Tell
    Like a Prayer
    Oh Father
    Hung Up
    The Look of Love
    X-Static Process
    Into the Groove
    Sky Fits Heaven
    You'll See
    Burning Up
    Ray of Light
    Frozen

yeah you can never please everyone....everyone is yammering about angel being left out....but its a small freaking miracle we got WTG and DYU. you can tell she clearly insisted that two tracks from each of her last few albums be on it.... miles away and hollywood should have stayed home (and i love hollywood!)

as for the videos, i dunno why itunes isnt selling all 47 as a package, just like the DVD. seems dumb.

Nah - Jump is a great song that deserves inclusion.

The song that I have rediscovered lately that is not on Celebration is "Keep It Together". I always forget how good that song is. Sure, as the 4th single with no video it is probably the most forgettable of all the LAP singles, but it has a sentiment that still rings true today.

And I would give "Miles Away" the boot and replace it with "I'll Remember".

    My top 10+1
    Borderline
    Don't Tell Me
    Into The Groove
    Jump
    Like A Prayer
    Over & Over
    I'll Remember
    Frozen
    Secret
    Oh Father
    +Secret Garden

  9. # Blogger zen~

My top ten of M constantly changes, but for now would include:

    Burning Up
    Everybody
    Frozen
    Paradise (Not For Me)
    Drowned World/Substitute For Love
    Open Your Heart
    Borderline
    Miles Away (really)
    Bedtime Story
    I Deserve It
    +1

To Have And Not To Hold

    +2

    Liquid Love (both versions)

  10. # Blogger Yuяi

    Here's my list:

    Express Yourself
    Vogue
    Like a Prayer
    Take a Bow
    Open Your Heart
    True Blue
    Borderline
    Don't Tell Me
    I'll Remember
    Secret Garden
    +Forbidden Love (COAD version)

Of course, this list can change with any given day. lol

Wherefore art "Deeper And Deeper" on the audio CD? What a mis-step! And we get Hollywood? Jeezus, come on.

  12. # Blogger davidlim

I, too, could've lived without the 'Love Profusion' video - happily have 'Nothing Really Matters' any day. What a symbolic and arty video.
